The Remedy of the Cross
We cannot be truly saved if the kingdom of God is not well established. This statement may look like a contradiction and foolishness on our part, but I say it understanding that if God is not at the center, we are not well, and no one and nothing will be safe. That is why the devil sought to make an attempt against God and His government, staging a coup d’état and removing Him from the center of man’s life, for he knows that only in this way can he bring chaos and anarchy upon the earth, as he did. Without God on His throne everything falls apart and enters a state of confusion where the devil can steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), which is his one and only intention.
Of course, God is God, and the kingdom, the magnificence and the power, the glory, the victory, and the honor are His alone, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is His. He is supreme above all! (1 Chronicles 29:11). His hand is mighty and His outstretched arm has not been shortened; if He wished, in a second He would put an end to everything and establish His good and perfect will. “For who is God but the LORD alone? And what rock is there besides our God?” (Psalms 18:31). But it has pleased our Lord to accomplish redemption in another way, for He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy (Micah 7:18). I acknowledge His majesty and say, like Solomon: “I have understood that everything God does will be perpetual; nothing shall be added to it, nor anything taken from it” (Ecclesiastes 3:14).
Nevertheless, what we are referring to when we speak of the final centralization of God and the reestablishment of His lordship in heaven and on earth is the same thing He referred to when He promised a Messiah, as it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow before me, and every tongue shall confess to God” (Romans 14:11). So the Bible says that when Christ came to the earth He came to seek and to save what had been lost (Luke 19:10). In context it is speaking about us—I will not deny that—but what I am saying is that before man was lost, something was lost in heaven, and by restoring what was lost in heaven, what was lost on earth will be restored.
We are always accustomed to seeing the effect of things and not the causes that originate them. Diseases are constantly fought by battling the symptoms, but whoever does that will never succeed, because fighting the symptoms may improve the disease, but it does not cure it. That is why the only wise God worked redemption. This was not something superficial or passing, since redemption began in eternity in the mind of God, when He realized, looking in His foreknowledge at what was going to happen after iniquity was generated and wickedness was multiplied in the heart of man. God made a plan, with which He was securing not only the preeminence of His dominion, but the safety and preservation of His holy universe. Therefore, the remedy of the cross was not to fight symptoms, but to undo causes.
