Bible Study #5
The Redemptive Work of Christ
1. Why did men belong to sin?
(Romans 7:14) For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
2. In what way was man sold to sin?
(Isaiah 52:3) For thus says the Lord: You were sold for nothing; and you shall be redeemed without money.
3. What was our relationship with sin before?
(Romans 6:16-20) Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to anyone as slaves to obey him, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you were slaves of sin, you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered; and having been set free from sin, you became servants of righteousness. I speak in human terms, because of the weakness of your flesh; for just as you presented your members to serve uncleanness and iniquity, so now present your members to serve righteousness for sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
4. If we were sold to sin, what did God have to do for us to become His property again?
(1 Corinthians 6:19, 20) Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
5. The word redemption means: “to set free by paying a price.” What was the price that God paid for our ransom?
(1 Peter 1:18-19)Knowing that you were redeemed from your vain way of life, which you received from your fathers, not with corruptible things, like gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. (Hebrews 9:12)Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
6. What precious things have we obtained as a result of redemption?
(Colossians 1:12-14) Giving thanks with joy to the Father, who has made us fit to share in the inheritance of the saints in light; who has delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
7. What is the relationship between justification and redemption?
(Romans 3:24) Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
8. What do we receive through redemption?
(Galatians 4:4, 5) But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
9. What did Jesus turn the slaves of sin into through the price of His blood?
(Romans 3:24) Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
10. How does Christ now present us before God?
(Colossians 1:22) In His body of flesh, through death, to present us holy and blameless and above reproach before Him…
11. What was our condition before God intervened on our behalf?
(Ephesians 2:1-3) And He gave life to you, when you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you once walked, following the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the will of the flesh and of the thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
12. In what way did the Lord make us alive together with Christ?
(Ephesians 2:4-8) But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together with Him, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God…
13. We were once strangers and also enemies; what are we now in Christ?
(Ephesians 2:19) Now, therefore, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the family of God.
14. What is Christ to us?
(1 Corinthians 1:30) But because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.
