Bible Study #2

1. Who was the originator of sin?

1 John 3:8 – “He who practices sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that He might undo the works of the devil.”

John 8:44 – “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not remained in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies”.

2. Did God create Lucifer a sinner?

Ezekiel 28:12-15 –“Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him: Thus says the Lord God: You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: carnelian, topaz, jasper, chrysolite, beryl, and onyx; sapphire, carbuncle, emerald, and gold; the workmanship of your tambourines and flutes was prepared for you on the day you were created. You, great cherub, protector, I set you on the holy mountain of God; you were there; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, until iniquity was found in you”.

3. What led Lucifer into sin and rebellion against God?

Ezekiel 16-18– “By the multitude of your trading you were filled with iniquity, and you sinned; therefore I cast you out of the mountain of God, and I cast you out from among the stones of fire, O protecting cherub. Your heart was lifted up because of your splendor; I will cast you to the ground, I will set you before kings, that they may look at you. By the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading, you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire from your midst, which consumed you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all who see you”.

4. What was the covetousness or sinful aspiration that led Lucifer to his lamentable and tragic fall?

Isaiah 14:12-14 “How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! You have been cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven; above the stars of God I will exalt my throne; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, and I will be like the Most High”.

5. What did God do with Satan after he rebelled?

Isaiah 14:15 – “Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the sides of the pit”.

Ezekiel 28:16,18 – “By the multitude of your trading you were filled with iniquity, and you sinned; therefore I will cast you out of the mountain of God, and I will cast you out from among the stones of fire, O protecting cherub… By the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading, you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire from your midst, which consumed you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all who see you”.

6. What was the test of obedience that God gave to Adam and Eve?

Genesis 2:15-17- “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying: Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die”.

7. How did the devil deceive our first parents to make them fall under the curse of sin?

Genesis 3:1-7 –“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made; and he said to the woman: Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said to the serpent: We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die. Then the serpent said to the woman: You will not surely die; for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons”.

8. How does the Bible define sin?

1 John 3:4 – “Whoever commits sin also breaks the law; for sin is the transgression of the law”.

1 John 5:17 – “All unrighteousness is sin; but there is sin not leading to death”.

9. How many human beings are sinners?

Romans 3:10-23– “As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands. There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become useless; there is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they practice deceit. The poison of asps is under their lips; their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God; since by the works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets; even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all who believe in Him. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…”

10. From what moment in our lives do we begin to be sinners?

Psalms 51:5 –“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me”.

11. How powerful is the law of sin in us?

Romans 7:14-25 –“For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand; for what I will to do, that I do not do, but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree that the law is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man; but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin”

12. Can man free himself from the dominion of sin by himself?

Jeremiah 13:23-“Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? can you also do good, being accustomed to doing evil?”

13. Besides separation from God, sickness and suffering, what other punishment did sin bring as a consequence?

Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

Revelation 21:8 – “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death”.

14. What is the only way we can be freed from the guilt and dominion of sin?

1 John 1:7 – “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin”.

Romans 8:1-4 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit”.
