The Fall of Man
1. What was the image that God gave to man when He created him?
Genesis 1:26,27- “Then God said: Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness; and let him have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the heavens, over the beasts, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them”
2. Was God responsible for the fall of man?
Ecclesiastes 7:29- “Behold, this only I have found: that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes”.
3. What was the test of obedience that God gave to Adam and Eve?
Genesis 2:15-17– “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying: Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die”.
4. In what way did our first parents disobey God?
Genesis 3:1-7- “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made; and he said to the woman: Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said to the serpent: We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die. Then the serpent said to the woman: You will not surely die; for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to gain wisdom, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons…”
5. What was man’s reaction when he had to face God after sin?
Genesis 3:8-13- “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him: Where are you? So he said: I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. And God said: Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat? Then the man said: The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate. And the Lord God said to the woman: What is this you have done? And the woman said: The serpent deceived me, and I ate”.
6. What did God do with man after sin?
Genesis 3:23,24- “Therefore the Lord sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life”.
7. How many human beings were affected by sin and its consequences?
Romans 5:12- “Therefore, as sin entered the world by one man, and by sin death, so death passed to all men, because all sinned”.
8. In what way did creation suffer the punishment for man’s sin?
Genesis 3:17-19- “And to the man He said: Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return”.
9. What is the tendency that man inherited from sin?
Genesis 6:5,6 – “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart”.
10. What part of man is sick from the affliction of evil?
Isaiah 1:5,6- “Why should you be stricken again? Will you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it, but wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; they have not been closed or bound up, or soothed with ointment”.
11. Can man, by himself, free himself from guilt and face the judgment of God?
Romans 3:9-20 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin. As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands. There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become useless; there is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they practice deceit. The poison of asps is under their lips; their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes. But we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God; since by the works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
12. Through whom can the sinner be justified and exchange his state of condemnation for one of reconciliation with God?
Romans 5:17-21 For if by the transgression of one alone death reigned, much more shall those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through one alone, Jesus Christ. So then, as by the transgression of one condemnation came upon all men, in the same way by the righteousness of one justification of life came upon all men. For just as by the disobedience of one man the many were constituted sinners, so also by the obedience of one, the many shall be constituted righteous. But the law was introduced that sin might abound; yet where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more; so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
